The third annual Children's Art & Literacy Festival featuring William Joyce took place June 12-14, 2,014 in downtown Abilene, Texas. The artwork of Mr. Joyce, a children's book illustrator and author and Academy Award-winning filmmaker, was on display in summer 2,014 at the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) and the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene. The CALF festival started on ArtWalk night with a costume contest and parade. A hailstorm halted activities, damaging buildings and cars, but Mr. Joyce was able to deliver his Artist Talk at the Paramount Theatre, sign books and unveil five bronze Guardians of Childhood sculptures commissioned by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council. A six sculpture will be dedicated at a later date. The festival continued all day Friday and Saturday with dramatic readings of Mr. Joyce's books, train rides, instrument petting zoo, Joyce movie fest at the Paramount, Easter egg hunts, magic shows and more. The event ended on a high note with a concert by the Grammy Award nominated duo Trout Fishing in America. Next year's festival: June 11-13, 2,015 featuring David Shannon.
